Wow! Celebrating our Summer Reading Challenge!

You did it!

NSES students met the challenge!  Our students read for a total of 62,746 minutes this summer.  That’s 1,046 hours, an average of 149 hours per week.  Way to go!  We loved reading the responses and even discovered some new books we’d love to read.

We are sending out invitations to all students who participated to attend a celebration on Friday, September 19 at 9:00 in the cafeteria.  We will have music and awards to honor all the good reading work you did over the summer.

We are proud of you and hope you are proud of yourselves!

Welcome Back and Summer Reading Challenge

Welcome back! It has been a great (but hot!) week here at NSES and we have been so happy that so many students have returned their Summer Reading Challenge forms. We love reading about all the great books kids got to curl up with this summer. As of right now, we have over 50 students who have completed the challenge. We will accept forms until Tuesday of next week and then we will set a date for our celebration so we can honor all the hard work everyone did.

If you are new to the blog, be sure to check out our past posts and our grade level information. Each grade level tab offers flash cards, word lists, and reading expectations so you can catch a glimpse of what your child will be learning this year. The “Parent” tab also offers great suggestions for websites and apps that can be used at home. As always, the best way to help your child become a reader is to make reading a part of your daily life. Let them see you read, talk about books, add reading to your nightly routine. The best way to become a better and more motivated reader is to read, read, read!

If you have any questions this year, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs.Mrs. Lafreniere (tlafreniere@nsps.us) or Mrs. Hawkins (bhawkins@nsps.us). We love to talk to parents and kids about reading and how you can help and we are looking forward to a great year!

Book Swap and Summer Slide

We are excited about our upcoming Book Swap at NSES on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, June 17th and 18th!  Students may bring in their gently used books to “swap” with other students to get new books to read for the summer….how fun is that?

With our Summer Reading Challenge and our Book Swap, we just want to emphasize how important it is to keep reading.  Practice makes better and the more you practice, the better you’ll be.  We are trying to avoid the “summer slide” where may children leave school in June with certain skills and abilities and come back in September having lost those skills because of a lack of practice.  Here is a great graphic to help with “summer slide”:
