Mrs. Lafreniere and Mrs. Hawkins, Proud Reading Teachers of NSES

First Grade

Students in first grade start to develop a wide range of words they can read automatically, otherwise known as “sight words”.  Sight words are words that can be read quickly and accurately without having to decode.  Often, the sight words we teach are high frequency words, meaning that they appear most often in books.  To allow children to begin to read smoothly and accurately, they must master these words with quick recognition so they have the mental energy to work on more complex reading tasks such as decoding new words and comprehending the text.

Please note that when we assess students on the mastery of these words, we also ask students to make changes to the high frequency words.  For example, we may ask a student to read “all” and then read “call” and then “calling”.  The principle is to teach first grade students that you can build on words you know to read and write many other words.
