Mrs. Lafreniere and Mrs. Hawkins, Proud Reading Teachers of NSES

We have a poster in our office that states : “The Top 10 Ways to Become a Better Reader: 1. READ 2. READ 3. READ 4. READ 5. READ 6.READ 7.READ 8.READ 9.READ 10. READ”.  Truly one of the best ways to become a better reader is to read and read often. We are always looking for ways to get kids motivated to read outside of school.  Recently, we came across an article detailing how reading to a therapy animal can be very beneficial.  It motivates children to read and it offers them an extremely positive and memorable experience associated with reading.  So we did some searching and were lucky enough to find a therapy dog to help us out.

Enter Orien and his “mommy” Brittany LaCroix.

Orien is a certified therapy dog and Brittany was excited about bringing him into the school to help kids get motivated about reading.  We invited our Title I students to stay after school to read to the therapy dog and we got a great response.  Orien is incredibly patient and the kids are genuinely excited about reading to the dog.  One student was a little nervous, stating “but I’m not a good reader!” and I said “of course you are, but even if you make some mistakes, Orien will never know”.  And that is the beauty of reading to him.  Some kids sat across from him while others never took their hands off him as they read.  Orien enjoyed the attention, the kids enjoyed being close to him, and their teachers enjoyed the practice and joy they were getting out of reading.  This was a win for everyone!

We are hoping to schedule some more dates for Orien to visit us, but in the meantime, take a look at the pictures below to see how much fun we had!
